Located in Canaan, Indiana, Flat Bottom Farms is owned and operated by Norbert Schafer. Although Norbert has farmed everything from corn to sorghum, the farm today is primarily focused on grass fed beef and tobacco.
This blog will serve as a medium for communicating the progress and set backs in developing a sustainable and profitable small farm. It will also provide information for those interested in purchasing grass fed beef or other Flat Bottom Farms products.
Norbert graduated from Purdue University with an Agricultural Engineering degree in 1979, worked in Indianapolis for four years, and moved back to the Madison area to start his farm in 1984.
Although Norbert grew up on a farm, the 29 years he has put into his own farm has certainly been a learning experience. Through reading countless books, grazing magazines, attending conferences and pasture walks, and serving on a number of several natural resource boards, Norbert is constantly working to improve the farm, its products, and the farming community around him.
